I have these photos of friends who are gone. I never know quite what to say. This guy affected us all in so many ways.

Peter did a portrait of me. So, I have a bit of him forever. I did this portrait of him. I'm so glad I did.

The best part of being a photographer is your memories remain in perfect focus.

Scott Seekins has always been his own best work of art. Twice a year he changes his clothing pallet from black to white and back again. April 29th 2011 was the night this year at Nick & Eddies.
Since the demise of The New French Bar, N&E's is the heir apparent.
Welcome to spring in Minneapolis. Looking good, Scott.

Why I Remain a Serious Photographer

History happens while you watch

Why I Remain a Serious Photographer

Yup. That's me in a self-timer photo from 1968. Standing next to me is Roger M. Iverson, the guy who changed my life by teaching me photography and many other things. Seated between us, John Pederson, one of my best high school buddies and a great photographer in his own right.
We are standing in the newsroom of the Devils Lake Daily Journal. And that is Hamms Beer. I was working for the paper as a summer job doing crime reports, collecting baseball line scores and being the feature photographer. They regularly freed up a whole page for me if I had a photo feature I wanted to run.
See the teletype on the left side of the frame? It says ASSOCIATED PRESS on the front. Not many nights after this photo was taken I was working late on Wednesday for a feature in Thursday's edition. It was June 5th 1968. I was the only one in the office. Just after 1am the phone rang. It was nurses at the hospital.
"Turn on the teletype! Turn on the teletype! Something's happened in California," they said. There was always someone awake and listening to the radio at the hospital.
We rarely ran the teletype at night, but I turned it on to hear the bell wringing repeatedly. That sort of panicky pattern only happened when there was a big story coming across the wire.
I stood there for the next several hours and witnessed the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy from a perspective that no longer exists. It was visceral—alone in a darkened newsroom as history poured out of a clattering and clanging old teletype on yellowed rolls of paper.
I stumbled upon this photo when I was testing out my new scanner that I hope will make it possible to digitize decades of old negatives and slides.
That whole story came back to me when this image resolved on my monitor. That's the great thing about photos. Your memories are always in focus.

Minneapolis jazz legend and Mid-American Music Hall of Fame inductee, Arne Fogel directed this vocal jazz tour deforce at The Capri Theater on West Broadway in North Minneapolis. The entire concept is based on the color blue its inclusion in the lyrics, themes and titles of so much jazz music.
Katie Gearty, Nancy Harms and Rachel Holder were the powerhouse trio that delivered on Fogel's theme. From Miles Davis's All Blues to Orbison's Blue Bayou with Rogers and Hart and Thelonius Monk thrown in, the evening was as indigo as was promised. The vocalists were accompanied by The Phil Aaron Trio: Phil Aaron, piano, Graydon Peterson, bass, and Jay Epstein, drums.

A Beautiful Day for Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter to Visit Hawthorne

A Beautiful Day for Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter to Visit Hawthorne

October 6th, 2010
On a golden autumn morning Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter came to Hawthorne Neighborhood to recognize and encourage the work of Habitat for Humanity. The dignitaries were there, Mayor R.T. Rybak, Senator Al Franken and Council Member Diane Hoffmann. The group shots were taken with legends of blue-shirted Habitat Volunteers, but the star of the show was the neighborhood in blazing fall color and the smiling neighbors, proud of their homes, their parks and their neighborhood.

NFCB Conference In StPaul Attracts Radio Luminaries

I have spent the last few days at the NFCB conference in StPaul. There would have been more photos, but I have spent so many days in gap-mouthed amazement over what I've been hearing that I haven't made a lot of images. If the next day or so gets more productive, I'll post them here. Until then, here's Maxi Jackson, the new President and CEO of NFIB, Bruce Theriault, Senior Vice President, Radio for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and Michael Eric Dyson, host of his own new radio program.

Dyson's oratorial skills elicited several "Amen, brothers" from the breakfast crowd. Yes, he is a thrilling speaker. Can't wait to hear his program.

It was a real honor. Hawthorne Neighborhood asked me to photograph the bench and plaque dedicated to the Carters. It's at the most beautiful spot in Farview Park. The view of the Minneapolis skyline is truly inspiring.

Getting our Groove on at the peace ball

Every now and then I get a photo assignment that is just downright transcendent. The 6th Annual Peace Ball was one of those events. October 10th at Lincoln School on Penn Avenue in North Minneapolis. Music by The Chastity Brown Band and Soul Tight Committee. Click on the photo above to see more photos or http://adventuresofjohnnynorthside.blogspot.com/ for a video of Don Samuels' speech.

Some Thoughts on the end of summer

Some Thoughts on the end of summer

I could be outside drinking in one of the last weekends of summer. Instead I'm sitting here reviewing the summer that's slipping away outside my window.
On August 15th Rochelle and John Ratzloff took us to Two Pony Gardens, http://www.twoponygardens.com to meet Lisa Ringer and Siri Knutson. The day was mild just like the whole summer has been this year. The overcast sky made for shadowless photos.
For a couple of weeks now I've been visiting this photo of a wasp nest. What a magnificent bit of engineering it is, but today I noticed the dahlias the farm is famous for. I thought I'd better share them with you while they become to distant a memory.

Here are a dozen more photos from that day in their wonderful garden:

While photographing Van Jones and Eric Utne at Ted Mann Auditorium for the Green Jobs: Rx for a healthy economy & a healthy environment I spotted a couple of legends from the past who are still legends today.
Right there on a bench in the middle of all this commotion—Clyde Bellecourt and Annie Young. These two people have fought battles longer than most of the crowd have been alive. They are still at it and we're better off for their efforts.

A Photo of Larry Lamb

A Photo of Larry Lamb

I seem to get good photos of my old friend Larry Lamb and I've waited too long to put one of them up on this blog. I made this photo when we went over to Larry's house for some of his storied soup. It never disappoints. Maybe I should make photos of him a regular feature.

Do you suppose it will get me more soup?
